HBA Mock Trials
Beatrice Mayes Institute Charter School, Houston’s oldest African-American school, is celebrating its 50th year with a number of special activities, including participating in the Houston Bar Association’s Mock Trial Program. Eighth grade students visited the courthouse on October 7 to enact their mock trial, after a 5-week classroom session with HBA staff and law students. The HBA’s Juvenile Justice Mock Trial Program has been teaching young teens about the justice system for over 40 years.
Volunteer attorneys provided one-on-one legal advice for veterans at Houston Stand Down, held October 7 at MacGregor Park. Stand Down provides numerous resources for homeless veterans in one location. The legal clinic was sponsored by the HBA Veterans Legal Initiative.
HBA Lawyers For Literacy Committee
Collect and Sort 27,480 Books
The HBA Lawyers for Literacy Committee and other volunteers from the legal community have sorted over 27,480 book donations from the annual book drive. Books for all ages go to over 30 organizations in the local community including shelters, literacy groups, and hospitals who need books.
