The Houston Bar Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary with "A
Day of Giving" on January 12th. Pictured here, at the Tracy Gee
Center are from left, Mark Kelly, secretary of the HBA Board of
Directors; Karl Stern, chair of the Houston Bar Foundation; and Gib
Walton, president of the State Bar of Texas. The Foundation
sponsored 10 legal advice clinics for low income residents at 10
locations throughout Harris County. |
The Houston Bar Foundation is
now in its 25th year of service to the community and the profession. The
success of the Foundation is due in large part to the commitment of HBA
members, who contribute $20 of their yearly dues to the Foundation. In
addition, the Foundation has a Fellows Program that provides the
opportunity for long-term giving.
For the first time since its creation
in 1982, the Foundation’s Board of Directors restructured the Fellows
Program in 2007. The new Fellows Program provides members the
opportunity to increase their contributions to achieve both short-term
and long-term goals for the Foundation, as well as their own charitable
giving plan. Following is an outline of the new Fellows Program:
A.
Beginning in 2007, the new Fellow pledge level increased to $2,000,
payable in a lump sum or $200 per year for 10 years.
B. Once the
original $2,000 commitment is met, a Fellow will have the opportunity to
become a Life Fellow by continuing to donate $200 per year for 10 years
or making an additional lump sum payment of $2,000.
C. Once the Life
Fellow commitment is met, a member may become a Sustaining Life Fellow
by continuing to donate $200 per year for 10 years or making a third
lump sum payment of $2,000. All members who became Life Fellows under
the original structure retain their Life Fellow status.
D. Current
Sustaining Life Fellows who complete their $1,500 pledge by December 31,
2007 will have the opportunity to make an additional donation of $200
per year for five years or make a lump sum payment of $1,000 to become a
Continuing Sustaining Life Fellow. Honorary Fellow is a distinction
given from time to time to an individual who has exhibited outstanding
interest in and support of the administration of justice. The
designation as a Patron of the Foundation is given to entities, such as
corporations, foundations or individuals, who have made substantial
contributions to the administration of justice through the Houston Bar
Foundation. To date, the late Joe M. Green of the Rockwell Fund is the
only individual to be honored as a Patron, and Shell Oil Company is the
only organization to receive that distinction.
Memorial contributions to
the Houston Bar Foundation are a lasting way to remember a loved one.
The Foundation acknowledges all memorials without specified amounts.
The
goal of the Houston Bar Foundation is to become self-sustaining, with
the ability to maintain and expand existing programs, while adding new
programs as needs arise. A tax-deductible contribution to the Houston
Bar Foundation is one of the best investments HBA members can make in
the future of their profession and their community. For more information
