Black History Month Celebration, February 8

The Harris County District Courts will host the annual celebration of Black History Month on Friday, February 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Court of Appeals at the 1910 Courthouse, 301 Fannin. Harris County Judges and officials will present significant cases from the county's case files and the District Clerk's Choir will perform. The event is open to the public.

Consumer Pro Bono Under the Bankruptcy Code - Free HVL Seminar, Feb. 8

Houston Volunteer Lawyers is sponsoring a free bankruptcy seminar for attendees who agree to take one chapter 7 case. "Consumer Pro Bono Under the Bankruptcy Code" will be held on Friday, February 8, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. at the Jury Assembly Room, U.S. Courthouse, 515 Rusk Ave., Houston, 77002 and has been approved for 4.0 hours MCLE, including 1.0 hour ethics credit. Lunch & Learn CLE Series, February 13

The HBA/CLE Committee invites HBA members to participate in one of the HBA's newest CLE offerings, Lunch & Learn. There is no charge to attend and members may bring a bag lunch or purchase pizza for $5. Click here for more information on the program. Harris County Law Library Open House, Feb. 13

The Harris County Law Library will have an open house on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The library is located at 1019 Congress. All attorneys and members of the judiciary are invited to attend.

HAY Center Ready Room Drive, February 18-22

The Houston Bar Association's HAY Center Committee will collect gently used or new household items for residents aging out of foster care to prepare to live on their own. Any donations are greatly appreciated. Law Week Poster, Essay and Photography Contests for Students, Due by March 8

In recognition of Law Day, the Houston Bar Association is sponsoring a Poster contest for elementary and middle school students; and an Essay and Photography contest for high school students, as well as Poster and Photography contests for Special Needs students. The theme for this year is "Realizing the Dream: Equality for All." The theme provides an opportunity to explore the movement for civil and human rights in America and the impact that it has had in promoting the ideal of equality under the law. Please pass along the information to any Houston-area students that might be interested. Prizes are awarded. Entries are due by March 8, 2013. 28th John J. Eikenburg 8K Fun Run, March 23 - Online Registration Available Now

The HBA's 28th Annual John J. Eikenburg Law Week Fun Run will be held on Saturday, March 23 at the Central Library Plaza, 500 McKinney, Downtown Houston. Please visit the Fun Run website, www.lawweekfunrun.com, to register for the race! Over the past 27 years, the event has raised over $1 Million for THE CENTER. The event features an 8K run, a one-mile non-competitive children's run, a non-competitive one-mile family walk, and a wheelchair division in the 8K. The 8K race is an official spring series race of the Houston Area Road Runners Association, and is a sanctioned U.S.A. Track and Field event.

February 4 - The Texas Lawyers Assistance Program will have its monthly confidential meeting on Monday, February 4 from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Therapist Lori Fiester, LCSW, will speak about "The Price of Perfectionism."
