HBF Annual Luncheon Set for February 23
The Houston Bar Foundation has scheduled its annual luncheon for Thursday, February 23, 2012 at The Houston Club. Bob McAughan of Locke Lord LLP will become the 2012 chair of the Foundation, succeeding William C. (Bill) Lowrey. The keynote speaker will be Ronald DePinho, M.D., president of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Click here for ticket order form. The deadline to purchase tickets is February 21.

Black History Month Celebration February 10
The Harris County District Courts will host the fifth annual celebration of Black History Month on Friday, February 10, 2012, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the courtroom of the First Court of Appeals in the 1910 Courthouse, 301 Fannin Street. The HBA will join other organizations as a sponsor of the program. Harris County judges and officials will present significant cases from Harris County's historical case files. The event is open to the public.
HAY Center Ready Room Drive Starts February 27
The HBA's HAY Center Committee will collect gently used or new household items February 27 - March 7, 2012 for residents aging out of foster care to prepare to live on their own. Donations should be dropped off at XXII Twenty Two Global Transport, LP, 1110 Henderson Street (1 block from Washington), Houston, Texas 77007 Monday – Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. A special evening drop-off date has been set at Hearsay Gastro Lounge, 218 Travis St. on Thursday, March 1 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. There will be a truck out front, valet parking and unloading assistance, and appetizers and drink specials will be available. Volunteers Needed for Tax-a-Thon March 1
The HBA's Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program will host a special "Tax-A-Thon" call-in advice program on Thursday, March 1, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the HBA. The program gives consumers basic legal information on tax issues over the phone. Volunteer attorneys who are knowledgeable in tax law are needed for the event. There will be two shifts: one from 4:45 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and the other from 6:45 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Bench Bar Pro Bono Awards Nomination Due March 2
The deadline for the fourth annual Harris County Bench Bar Pro Bono Awards is Friday, March 2, 2012. The awards are sponsored by the Harris County Judiciary, in conjunction with the Houston Bar Association, to encourage lawyers to volunteer direct legal services for low-income residents. A committee of Harris County judges will select the recipients. Awards will be presented by the judiciary at a special luncheon in the spring. Each winner will receive a custom-designed award for their office, and the winner's names will appear on permanent plaques on display in the Civil, Criminal, Family and Juvenile courthouses. Register for the 27th Law Week Fun Run - Help Us Raise $1 Million!
The HBA's 27th Annual John J. Eikenburg Law Week Fun Run will be held on Saturday, March 24 at Sam Houston Park, 1100 Bagby, Downtown Houston. Please visit the Fun Run website, www.lawweekfunrun.com, to register for the race! Over the past 26 years, the event has raised more than $941,000 for THE CENTER and the goal this year is to raise over $60,000 to break the $1 Million mark. The event features an 8K run, a one-mile non-competitive children's run, a non-competitive one-mile family walk, and a wheelchair division in the 8K. The 8K race is an official spring series race of the Houston Area Road Runners Association, and is a sanctioned U.S.A. Track and Field event.
