Information on alcohol use:

If you or someone you know is suffering from acute alcohol poisoning:

  • According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms can include confusion, vomiting, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, pale or bluish skin tone, low body temperature, and unconsciousness.
  • Lay them down on their side. Use a backpack, a piece of furniture or a wall to keep them propped up. The reason they need to be on their side is because if they vomit while unconscious, they can choke to death. Do not leave them alone.
  • It is okay to call 9-1-1, call the Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) or go to a hospital. Doctors and other emergency workers do not care if the patient is under the drinking age. They just want to save lives.

Do not binge-drink.

  • In the short term, binge-drinking makes you more likely to make poor decisions, gives you memory loss, dehydrates you, can make you feel ill, and leaves you vulnerable.
  • In the long term, you can get liver disease, brain damage, cancer, hypertension, weight gain, inflammation, infertility, osteoperosis, and mental illness. It also increases your chances of becoming alcohol-addicted or alcohol-dependent.

To avoid binge-drinking:

  • Decide before you are exposed to the alcohol that you are going to exhibit self-control.
  • Know your tolerance level and how much alcohol is in each drink you consume.
  • Drink at least one 8 oz. glass of water between every serving of alcohol. (One serving is 14 g of pure alcohol — or more simply stated, 12 oz. of beer, 5 oz. of wine, or 1.5 oz. of distilled spirits.)
  • Have someone you trust keep your alcohol consumption in check.
  • Do not consume more than five drinks in two hours if you are male, or more than four drinks in two hours if you are female.

Do not drink and drive.

  • Harris County happens to be a hotbed for drunk driving fatalities, which is a reputation we do not want to keep.
  • Alcohol is a depressant that impairs your ability to move quickly and make good decisions — two things that are required for safe driving.
  • If you are underage and you are caught driving with alcohol in your bloodstream — any blood alcohol content level over a flat 0 — it is illegal.
  • Never get into a car with an intoxicated driver at the wheel. You are taking your life into your own hands.

To avoid drinking and driving:

  • Decide before you leave that you will not drive after you drink. Come up with a plan ahead of time.
  • Stay close to home.
  • Carpool/go out with a group. Designate one group member to stay completely sober so that they can get you home safely.
  • Call somebody you trust to take you home.
  • Pay a service for a ride.
