The committee coordinates the HBA’s Interprofessional Drug Education Alliance (IDEA) in the fall and spring each bar year. The committee is responsible for recruiting medical professionals and attorneys to volunteer to educate 5th graders on the medical and legal consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. The committee reviews and updates the legal information included in the training materials used for the volunteers.
The next IDEA programs are Tuesday, October 23, 2018 and Tuesday, February 19, 2019. Contact Ashley Gagnon Steininger at firstname.lastname@example.org or (713) 759-1133 to sign up as an IDEA presenter, or if your school is interested in hosting an IDEA presentation.
“On behalf of our Principal, Cecilia Gonzales, the Lyons Elementary Fifth Grade Team and myself, I would like to thank each of you for your time and efforts with the IDEA Program. The program was a great success…. The students not only learn the legal and medical reasons why to stay away from drugs, but they also get to interact with doctors and lawyers in a friendly environment. It gives them other, out-of- school, role models delivering the same message to stay away from drugs.” – LaShawnda Harris, MS, RN, Lyons Elementary School
“All went well at Atkinson. As I’m sure many have, we also got the kids to practice saying ‘no’ to us. Thank you!” – Derick Mendoza, IDEA Presenter
“I had a good talk with the students at each session.” – Angelica Hernandez, IDEA Committee Co-Chair & Presenter
“Dr. Rueda Castrillon and Mrs. Chang were wonderful!!” – Olga Chavez, Smith Elementary School
