The Houston Bar Association, a membership association of over 11,000 Houston-area lawyers, is soliciting applications for the position of Executive Director. The mission of the HBA is to serve the needs of its lawyers and enhance the legal profession through promoting professionalism, access to justice, the rule of law, equality and inclusion in the legal profession, legal education for the profession and the public, and service to the Houston community through law-related or high-impact and high-involvement projects.

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall operation of the HBA and providing oversight of certain related organizations. In addition to responsibility for HBA staff operations, the Executive Director assists the Board of Directors in accomplishing its mission.

The successful candidate for this position should

  • Have a demonstrated record of successful senior management experience, including managing staffs and budgets.
  • Possess experience or familiarity with current and emerging issues and concerns affecting practicing lawyers and the legal profession.
  • Be an adept communicator, comfortable with the responsibility of acting as a spokesperson and advocating for the HBA and its mission when called upon to do so.

A four-year baccalaureate degree from a recognized college or university is required; a law degree is preferred.
