The Houston Bar Foundation was established in 1982 as a charitable arm of the Houston Bar Association.

Since that time, the Foundation has supported programs that help provide legal representation to the indigent, promote community understanding of our legal system and foster the administration of justice. Through the generosity of its many contributors, the Foundation has been able to make a difference in the greater Houston community.

Donations made through this link contribute to the general HBF funds and cannot be made for a specific program.

Optional contributions to “Become an HBF Annual Supporter” on HBA dues statements are directed to the Houston Bar Foundation as one-time donations on a year-by-year basis.

The Houston Bar Foundation is organized exclusively for purely public charity and educational purposes, including purposes which support, promote, and encourage activities for the furtherance of justice and legal education through the sponsorship and encouragement of legal research, publications, institutes, forums, and the establishment of scholarship; the institution and maintenance of legal aid facilities for the indigent or working poor and the acceptance of aid and grants from governmental and private sources; the extension of financial assistance to attorneys or members of an attorney’s family who are “in need.”

Since its inception, the Foundation has grown rapidly in both membership and funding. HBF Fellows, who are the lifeblood of the Foundation, total 2,184 as of 2017:

  • 398 Fellows
  • 1,318 Life Fellows
  • 43 Continuing Life Fellows
  • 15 Sustaining Life Fellows
  • 6 Continuing Sustaining Life Fellows
  • 46 attorneys added to the Fellows program in 2017

Our endowment now stands at over $13 million. The annual support of our Fellows, together with the generosity of the individuals, law firms, corporations and other organizations that regularly contribute to the Foundation, is helping us make steady progress toward our ultimate goal of becoming self-sustaining.
