Celebrate Civility with the HBA, April 20

Day of Civility Luncheon
Commemorate “A Day of Civility” and join the Houston Bar Association, the American Board of Trial Advocates and Houston Young Lawyers Association for lunch on Friday, April 20, from 11:30-1:00 at the 14th Court of Appeals in the 1910 Courthouse. Attorneys and judges will discuss cases where civility, or lack of civility, made a difference for clients. Panelists include Judge Mike Engelhart, Judge Michael Gomez, Judge Sylvia Matthews, Judge Robert Schaffer, and moderator Geoff Gannaway. Here the HBA will celebrate its creed, “Professionalism: A Lawyer’s Mandate,” with activities and CLE.

There is no charge to attend, but RSVPs are required.

In conjunction with the State Bar of Texas, the Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals proclaimed April 20th as “The Texas Day of Civility in the Law,” urging all lawyers to participate in programs at bar associations around the state, to focus on the spirit and aspirations in the Texas Lawyer’s Creed. It is also a day for lawyers to rededicate themselves to courtesy and professionalism toward adversaries, judges, peers, workplace colleagues and in performing their duties to clients, as well as other counsel and their clients.

Java with the Judges
Join your colleagues for coffee and donuts as judges provides tips on ethical practice in their courts. Confirmed guests include Judge Susan Brown of the 185th Criminal District Court, Judge David Farr of the 312th Family District Court, and Judge Michael Schneider of the 315th Juvenile District Court. The program is 8:00-9:30 a.m. in the 17th Floor Conference Suite of the Civil Courthouse, 201 Caroline. No preregistration is required.
All Day Ethics CLE Videos
Stop by the HBA office any time between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to watch videos and earn CLE/Ethics credit at no charge. Feel free to bring your lunch or snacks. The office is located at 1111 Bagby Street, FLB 200, Houston, 77002.
Law School Outreach
HBA staff will visit all three Houston law schools on April 20 to network with students and provide copies of the HBA’s creed, “Professionalism: A Lawyer’s Mandate.”
