Harris County Bench Bar Pro Bono Awards Recognize Outstanding Service

Congratulations to the 2019 Harris County Bench Bar Pro Bono Awards recipients: Vinson & Elkins LLP; Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld LLP, Powers Law Group, Jordan Turk of Koons Fuller, Ryan Van Steenis of Ajamie LLP; and the Hon. Jane Bland, who received the President’s Pro Bono Award. Keynote speaker was U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison, and awards were presented by HBA President Warren Harris and District Court Administrative Judge Robert Schaffer.

At the 11th Annual Harris County Bench Bar Pro Bono Awards ceremony and luncheon Wednesday, May 8, attendees gathered in the Ceremonial Courtroom of the Civil Courthouse to honor award recipients. The Hon. Keith P. Ellison, a U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of Texas, delivered the keynote address.

Honorees included:
Vinson & Elkins LLP – Outstanding Service by a Large Firm.
Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP – Outstanding Service by a Mid-size Firm.
Powers Law Group – Outstanding Service by a Small Firm.
Jordan Turk (KoonsFuller, P.C.) – Outstanding Service by an Individual.
Exxon Mobil Corporation – Outstanding Service by a Corporate Law Department.
The Hon. Jane Bland – President’s Award, a special recognition given periodically for excellence in activities that promote equal access to justice
Ryan Van Steenis – Pro Bono Star, a recognition given periodically for outstanding service on a project that contributes to pro bono services.

Each year, the HBA Harris County Bench Bar Pro Bono Awards Committee recognizes outstanding pro bono work performed through any recognized legal services provider or through direct representation on behalf of a non-profit that serves the community.
