The Houston Bar Association is the recipient of the 2018 Deborah G. Hankinson Award from the Texas Access to Justice Commission. The award honors bar associations and young lawyer affiliates that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to access to justice by creating initiatives that increase access to legal aid services, increase awareness of access to justice issues, and raise funds for legal aid providers.
The HBA was honored for its access to justice efforts including an extensive program of monthly and bimonthly legal clinics customized to meet the needs of Harris County residents, extensive legal services during and following Hurricane Harvey, and raising more than $735,000 for pro bono legal services through the 68th Harvest Celebration. The HBA won the award in the category that includes Texas bar associations over 900 members.
Benny Agosto, Jr., HBA president-elect, accepted the award on behalf of HBA Immediate Past President Alistair Dawson from Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman during the State Bar of Texas 2018 Bar Leaders Conference on July 21 in Austin.
