Three panelists sit at an oblong table in a row. On the far left is a woman with long hair and a black shirt and in the middle is a woman with short hair and a polka-dotted shirt. Both of them are looking to the viewer's right and smiling. The man on the right, who has glasses and a dark suit, is looking to the viewer's left.

The Family Law Section of the Houston Bar Association promotes the goals of the HBA within the community of family lawyers in Houston. With a membership of almost 500 attorneys, the Section includes family law attorneys with a wide range of backgrounds, knowledge and experiences who serve to mentor and encourage one another in addressing the many complex issues that can arise in family law cases. At the monthly meetings, members have access to quality CLE programming as well as an opportunity to network among other family lawyers and the family law judiciary.

Four middle-aged women in professional attire sit at the far end of a circular table, smiling at the camera. There is food in front of them and a large window behind them.Family Law Section leadership and members consistently give back to the community through organized events geared to assisting those in need, including:

  • Providing monthly updates of pertinent case law to its members;
  • Sponsoring CLE programs for family law attorneys;
  • Volunteer efforts at HBA legal clinics;
  • Staffing family law attorneys for the HBA’s monthly LegalLine program;
  • Contributing annually to projects such as Habitat for Humanity;
  • Grading thousands of Houston student essays entered in the national “Do the Write Thing” writing competition;
  • Collecting and contributing to HBA’s “Dress for Success” program;

The HBA Family Law Section, one of the oldest among HBA sections, consistently strives to equip its membership with all the tools necessary to better serve those Houston and Harris County families in need of quality family law legal services.

The HBA Family Law Section is adopting the Domestic Relations Office’s (DRO) Visitation Center for its Year-End service project. The Visitation Center opened in March 2018 and provides supervised group visitation for Harris County families at seven locations. The Section’s desire is that each child who visits their parent through The Visitation Center receives a gift this holiday season.

A Giving Tree, complete with ornaments, will greet attendees at the October and November Family Law Section luncheons in the area where attendees register. Ornaments are also available by calling The Visitation Center at (713) 274-7285. Each ornament will have the first name and age of a child participating in The Visitation Center. Attendees can select a child by taking the ornament and bringing a gift to be distributed at The Visitation Center’s holiday parties on December 21. Suggested gift lists will be available for attendees by age group. Gift prices are suggested at no more than $25. Gifts can be dropped off at: (1) the DRO intake office on the 17th floor of the Civil Courthouse, (2) The DRO’s Visitation Center’s Administrative Office at 1310 Prairie, 10th Floor or (3) the HBA/FLS Holiday Party at the ZaZa Hotel.

Lastly, The Visitation Center will host holiday parties at the its seven sites on December 21. Volunteers to dress up as Santa Claus, elves and other holiday characters are needed. Sign-ups will be available at the luncheons. Thank you for your participation in this worthwhile endeavor.
