Challenges in LATAM associated with ESG and Chinese Companies

Companies around the world are faced with renewed pressure to have strong Environmental, Social, and Governance (“ESG”) performance in their operations. Investors are increasingly placing sustainability at the center of their investment approach. In LATAM companies are also experiencing these ESG pressures while, at the same time, competing with Chinese state-backed/owned companies which are not necessarily subject to the same burdens.
The panel will discuss whether there could be an upcoming “clash” between the international ESG pressures, state’s interests in securing environmental protections and avoiding social conflict, and China’s aggressive investment strategy in LATAM. Could there be fair competition under these differing standards?
 

Speakers:

Pablo Gil de Montes: Managing Director at Gryphon Strategies, where he heads the DC and Miami offices and the Latin American practice group.  

R. Evan Ellis, PhD.: Research Professor of Latin American Studies at the U.S. Army War College Strategic Studies Institute, with a focus on the region’s relationships with China and other non-Western Hemisphere actors, as well as transnational organized crime and populism in the region. 

Jonathan C. Drimmer: Partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Paul Hastings, and co-chair of the firm’s ESG Risk, Strategy and Compliance practice. 

Claudia Valdivia: Head of Compliance & ESG Leader in Internet Para Todos, in charge of leading the design, implementation, and reporting of ESG strategy & Compliance program, providing guidance and risk advisory to directors and employees.
