Updates from the People’s Court
This CLE will address recent legislative and Supreme Court changes to a variety of the most common case types: class C misdemeanors, juvenile diversion, evictions, and ODLs.

Judge Kate Chancia
Judge Katie Chancia is the Staff Attorney for the Harris County Justice Courts, a position she has held for the past twelve years in which she provides legal advice and assistance to the sixteen Justices of the Peace and their combined 300+ court clerks. In this role, she also provides support for the Harris County Civil Courts at Law, Probable Cause Court, and Office of Court Management. She is also the Presiding Judge for the Cities of Jersey Village and Stagecoach, first taking the bench in 2018.
Judge Chancia has spent almost the entirety of her legal career working with courts of local jurisdiction, including almost five years as a program attorney and director of clerk education at TMCEC and a brief stint as a municipal prosecutor with the City of Houston. She has a special interest in juvenile law (having interned and worked both with the Attorney General’s Juvenile Law Division and the former Texas Juvenile Probation Department) and court administration (having obtained her Certified Court Manager and faculty certifications from the National Center for State Courts). She also enjoys teaching judges, clerks, and lawyers across the state through the judicial training centers, the State Bar, and various clerk associations.
Judge Chancia obtained her bachelor’s degree from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and her Juris Doctorate from Mercer University School of Law in Macon, Georgia.
