About the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Section
The Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the HBA is committed to educating and informing members of the Section, the HBA, and the public on the nature and benefits of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), including mediation, arbitration, case evaluation, early dispute resolution, collaborative law, cooperative practice, and other forms of alternatives to litigation. ADR processes include many alternatives to having a court (state or federal judge or jury) decide the outcome of a legal dispute in a trial or appeal. ADR processes can be used to resolve any type of dispute including disputes involving contract, family, neighborhood, employment, business, housing, personal injury, consumer, and environmental disputes.
Mediation is relatively new to the profession and the Texas courts as it did not begin to receive its widespread acceptance until after the passage of the Texas Alternative Dispute Resolution Procedures Act in 1987.
The ADR Section co-hosts a Reception for the Judiciary in December in lieu of its regular monthly meeting.
