Law Day 2026 Contests Are Open
Every year on May 1, Law Day reminds us of the vital role law plays in our society and encourages young people to understand the legal system. For Law Day 2026, the State Bar of Texas has chosen the theme: “The Texas Constitution and the Rule of Law,” highlighting how the Constitution shapes our laws and daily lives. Learn more here.
The HBA joins the State Bar of Texas and the Texas Young Lawyers Association in celebrating the importance of the rule of law and its impact on our nation and local communities by hosting essay, photo, and poster contests based on the State Bar of Texas's theme.
All HBA members are encouraged to share these contests (K-12th grade) with their children, friends, and teachers.
This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the Texas Constitution, which took effect on February 15, 1876. Over the years, Texans have amended their Constitution hundreds of times since then, reflecting that the highest law of our state remains in the hands of the people. As the foundational legal document governing Texas, the Constitution not only has its own Bill of Rights, which is laid out in Article I, but describes the structure of Texas government, and provides a host of provisions that affect the daily lives of Texans. The Constitution is an essential tool for the rule of law in Texas because it determines what authority belongs to the government, what rights are maintained by individual citizens, and how the balance of power will be maintained.

HBA Connects with Future Lawyers at STCL Houston Career Fair
The HBA was excited to participate in South Texas College of Law Houston’s Career Connections: Legal Organization Showcase on February 24. Our Associate Director of Community Engagement & Initiatives, Georgina Peña, and CE&I Coordinator Juliana Escobedo spent the afternoon visiting with students, sharing the many ways the HBA can support them as they begin their legal careers.
Georgina and Juliana encouraged attendees to take advantage of free HBA membership for law students and highlighted opportunities to get involved, from networking events and pro bono programs to mentorship and leadership development. We enjoyed meeting so many enthusiastic future lawyers and look forward to welcoming them into the HBA community!
Learn more about membership benefits for law students here.
Change to Credit Card Processing Fees
The Houston Bar Association is transitioning to a new payment system that will implement a 3.0% surcharge on all credit card payments processed through the HBA merchant account beginning March 1, 2026. This surcharge will apply to membership dues, event registrations, and contributions to the Foundation and Sections.
The Board set this surcharge at a rate lower than our actual processing cost to ensure that the HBA does not profit from this policy change.
Members who wish to avoid this fee have the option to pay via eCheck (a form of ACH), debit card or check. For any questions, please contact ronr@hba.org.
Sign Up for the HBA's 2026 Spring Days of Service

Dispute Resolution Center
March Madness & Mediation: Advancing to the Final Four Without a Trial
Every March, attention turns to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament where strategy, preparation, and execution determine who advances and who goes home. Litigation can feel much the same: high stakes, unpredictable turns, and significant risk. At the Harris County Dispute Resolution Center (DRC), we believe there’s a better way to move your case forward. Mediation keeps the parties in control, reduces costs, preserves relationships, and often resolves disputes efficiently...sometimes in a single session without leaving the outcome to chance.
Trials, like tournament games, can produce surprises. Mediation, by contrast, offers a structured and confidential environment to evaluate risk, manage expectations, and work toward resolution before the “buzzer” sounds. Our trained volunteer mediators facilitate productive dialogue and help parties design practical agreements tailored to their needs. If your case is pending in a Harris County court, DRC mediation services are available at no cost for Harris County residents or court-referred matters. Before heading into litigation overtime this March, consider whether mediation can help you advance without the madness.

The court will refer them adverse parties to conduct brief Dispute Resolution sessions between mostly pro se landlords and tenants.

Three former Harris County Civil District Court trial judges – Hon. Brent Gamble, Hon. Jeff Work, and Hon. Joseph J. “Tad” Halbach – discuss opening statements in the context of a civil trial.

This discussion will help attorneys assist and prepare clients who are appointed to serve in the role of dependent administrator. The approach will be on court expectations and how to meet them. While the topic relates primarily to maintenance and production of information necessary to properly file relevant pleadings and financial accountings, the topic will necessarily provide an overview of ethical and fiduciary obligations of an administrator.
